“Midnight Quarry” is a collage painting based on recollections from high school days of night swims at an abandoned stone quarry near Akron, Ohio. The risks of such an adventure did not occur to any of us at the time. (It does occur to me now) I still have dreams of jagged walls of rock rising above pitch black water. We only had moonlight to guide us along thin ledges to find the best spots to launch ourselves into the depths. A minor key palette of subdued violet and green shadows deepens the ominous mood. An arc of glowing foliage provides some relief. However, I think if I could turn this image into music, it would be a blues.
